What Is A Sound Wave?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A sound wave is a compression of the elastic material that it is traveling through.  Air is compressible and transmits sound waves.  Water is slightly compressible, and also transmits sound, but at about five times the velocity.  Steel conducts sound at a rate even faster.  Compression waves are different than Electro-Magnetic waves.  EM waves can travel through a vacuum but sound cannot.
