Algeria gained their independence from France in The Algerian War (1954-1962), also known as Algerian War of Independence. French conquest of Algeria began in 1830 and by the 1900's French settlers had taken most of the best land. War was declared against the them by the National Liberation Front in 1954. In 1962 a cease-fire was agreed between the two groups and independence declared.
