Dr Schlessinger's first two given names were Laura Catherine. She was born in the New York borough of Brooklyn on the sixteenth day of the month of January in the year 1947. He father's name was Monroe Schlessinger. He was affectionately called Monty. The name of Dr Schlessinger's mother is Yolanda Ceccovini Schlessinger.

Dr Schlessinger is the older of two sisters. The age difference between her and her younger sibling, who was named Cindy, is eleven years. She spent her formative years in Brooklyn and then in Long Island, New York, where her family (which she described as a dysfunctional family) moved when she was growing up.
