The name Levi means "joining". It was the name of the third son of Leah and Jacob and the creator of the Levite tribe of primordial Israel. The Levites were the sole Israelite tribe not to receive tribal after being led by Joshua to the land of Canaan.
The tribe of Levi carried out certain religious duties for the Israelites along with political responsibilities. According to the Bible, Levi was a clever and fierce political soldier, famous for hits fits of anger.
Levi had a total of three sons, Gershon, Kohath, Merari and one daughter, Jochebed. On the basis of the Book of Exodus, it is said the Levi died at the age of 137 years. A few of the most well known descendents of Levi include Moshe better known as Moses according to the English language.
