What Is The Romans In Britain And Why Was It Controversial?

Answer Question

The Roman's in Britain, is a place by the playwright Howard Brenton, which was produced at the Royal National Theatre in London, England.  The play caused a huge controversy because it involved seeing a Roman soldier buggering a naked Saxon man in front of the audience.  Although the theatre has always taken risks and nudity is completely allowed, the depiction of homosexual rape was considered to be such a moral affront, that the famous 'saviour' and 'protector' of our moral standards, Mrs Mary Whitehouse began court action against the director.  Like most well meaning busy-bodies, she hadn't seen the play herself of course.  Thus she was qualified to make a decision.

She pursued a private prosecution against Michael Bogdanov, causing him great personal stress.

The entire prosecution rested on the issue of the testimony of Whitehouse's lawyer who had 'seen an act of gross indecency' carried out on the stage, and as the director had been in charge, he has procured this act and was responsible for it.  When it was argued that the laywer had sat at the back, some ninety feet away, the case was thrown out.

Britain is unfortunately full of people with nothing else to do but tell other people what's good for them.
