I've Been Feeding My Rats 'Reggie Rat Food' And They Are Getting Quite Fat Yet I Don't Seem To Give Them Much. Is This Normal?
Answers
Many rat owners do not know that Reggie rat food can actually be harmful to the rats. There are lots of colourings and additives in it which can cause problems. However, many people feed their rats on Reggie rat without any problems at all. In this particular case however, I think cutting down the amount of Reggie Rat food that you give to the rats either has to be cut down, or you do need to change their food.
Some rats are more prone to put on weight than others and unfortunately, Reggie rat food does tend to put on weight more than other foods. It doesn't help that rats are natural storers and as soon as they get their food they hide it and save it for later. This often means that many owners feed their rats, come back a couple of hours later and all the food is gone. Mistakenly they think that the rats have eaten all the food but it is actually hidden in the bottom of the cage. So they feed the rats again and this can cause the rats to become overweight. They will only eat which biscuits they want to eat and they will leave the rest, meaning that they do not get a balanced diet.
So cut down on your portions and watch for any buried and hidden food! If the rats still keep getting bigger, then do change their food!

No,a better food for your rat would be a pellet food, this doesn't allow selective eatina and provides a more balanced diet for your rat.

The pellets are a good idea, but it is best to supplement that a few times a week with fresh food. Cooked and chopped meat or vegetables, as well as fresh fruit, uncooked noodles, peanuts (though not many or often- they're fattening) and crackers are some of the "people food" we treat our rats to a few times a week.
Be sure not to overfeed them the fresh fruits and veggies as too much water obtained from them can cause an upset stomach.
If you're not feeding your rats much and they're still gaining weight, it may be wise to increase their time out of the cage or provide areas for them to climb and run. Obesity will shorten your rats' lifespan.
