Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

He is arguably the most important Latin American writer of the 20th century, if not one of the most eminent writers ever, in any language or place.

García Márquez was born in Colombia where he has worked as author and journalist.  In 1982 he won the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature.  He has earnt the nickname "Gabo" by his millions of devoted fans.

Gabo's best known piece is One Hundred Years of Solitude, a novel which became an instant classic.  It chronicles the lives of several generations of the same family in an "ordinary"  Colombia village.  "Ordinary" except that all sorts of bizarre and sometimes wonderful things happen there, in the purest tradition of Magical Realism.

He has written much more, including newspaper articles, short stories, other epic novels, and nonfiction,  Although Colombian born and infused with the spirit and culture of that nation, he has lived most of his adult life in Mexico and Europe.
