Are Deserts Always Sandy?

Answer Question

No, but undoubtedly the common perception of the desert is of sand dunes, partly due to Hollywood movies depicting the French Foreign Legion.

Desert climates are generally located either side of the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Lots of deserts are sandy, admittedly, but the official definition of a desert is an area with less than 25 centimetres of water per year or regions where the potential evaporation rate is twice as great as the precipitation.

This means that Antarctica at the South Pole is a desert area as most of the moisture is locked up year round in the form of ice.

Deserts, then, can be formed from many different landscapes. Some deserts are sandy, but many others are rocky, salt pans such as Death Valley in California, or cold snowy places like Antarctica.

While most deserts are generally hot during the day time, the lack of cloud cover means the heat of the day is lost to the atmosphere and at nights temperatures can drop to freezing point and below.
