For the most part, and most of the time, getting a filling is not all that painful. Some people have their teeth filled without the dentist numbing their gums! I am a chicken so I have the Novocain.

The first shot to numb it can sometimes hurt a little bit. But usually it happens so fast, and the medicine starts working so quickly that it is minor. A good dentist knows just where to put the shot, and how many to give you, and will not work in any way to cause you undo pain.

Most of my experience has been that the fear of getting the filling is worse than the actual procedure. Once the gum and tongue are numb, you can not feel the drill.

For sure it is much better to have the tooth filled than to endure the pain of a cavity.

If you are going to have a deeper filling, which can be painful, the dentist should offer you a local anasthetic. This is usually done through an injection inside the mouth. The injection itself may cause some pain, but is over in a few seconds - it's usually out almost the moment it begins to hurt. After that you just wait until you can't feel anything on that side of your mouth - once it's numb, the filling won't hurt either.

Minor fillings, where you may not be given anasthetic, can hurt - but a good dentist will a) know if it's likely to be very painful, and give you an injection if necessary, and b) stop before it gets bad. Modern dentistry is much less painful han it used to be, and although a filling can feel unpleasant, you can be sure that any pain will be very brief.

I used to be a dental nurse before i trained as a physio and i can tell you that fillings on the whole dont hurt. If its a small one you wont even need an injection. If its a deeper one then the dentist will give you a small injection to numb the area then you wont feel a thing. Fillings can be mercury or white ones depending on where the filling is. If you have a good dentist you wont even feel the injection your mouth will just feel big and your lips may go numb too. In future cut out all the sugary snacks and drinks and there wont be any need for any more fillings!!!!!! Good luck!!!
