    The first novel by Wilbur Smith was "When the Lions Feed". It was published in the year 1964. It was the favourable response that Wilbur Smith received form this book that encouraged him to continue writing in the future. At that time he was working for the Salisbury Inland Revenue.

    The book When the Lions Feed would later become the first book in the series of books known as The Courtney Series. The series centred on the different stages or times of the Courtney Family. The protagonist of the novel was Sean Courtney. The story of the book has Sean and his twin brother Garrick falling out over the affections of a woman. The setting of the novel is the impending war against the Zulu nation. Sean on finding out that his brother has married his girlfriend and adopted his son leaves and goes into self exile.
