I'm Thinking Of Buying A Classic Saab 900, What Should I Look Out For When Inspecting A Vehicle?

Answer Question

Apart from the general condition and road worthiness of the vehicle, which applies in buying any secondhand car, ask to see the service history and check this against the recorded mileage. Look for signs that the car has been well cared for and maintained. The biggest problem with Saab 900s of this vintage is their capacity to be neglected and keep on going. Check the fluid levels when the engine is cold, check if the oil filter looks new and if all the belts are in good condition.

A favourite rust trap is the bottom of the doors, from the exterior rubber seal inwards. If in need of replacement, count on around £400 for a new door.

Other components to pay special attention to are:
    • electric windows
    • turbos coming up to 100,000 miles or so
    • the hand brake
    • the ignition lock mechanism
    • hatchback door support rams
