How Do I Stop My Female Dog From Lactating After Weening The Puppies?

Answer Question

    She should start to dry up on her own after the puppies are weaned. But here is what I  have done to help the process along - I do this on a five day schedule and has always worked for me. This was recommended by my vets which will also help prevent any mammary gland issues;

    The day the pups are weaned, the mother should not receive any food although she should have plenty of fresh water. The pups should be kept separate from her and given food and water (a puppy food made mushy with warm water as well as fresh water for them to drink).

    The following day, I give about 1/4 the amount of food she was eating before being bred. You can allow the pups to be with mom this day as this should drain the remaining milk dry from her.

    The third day - I up her food intake to 1/2 the amount prior to the breeding. The fourth day she gets 3/4 amount of her normal food and of course on the fifth day she is back to her previous amount of food before the breeding.

    Best of luck! :)

      It will dry up naturally once they are not being used. Do not try to empty them as that will only make more milk production :-). If you notice that any are hot, firm, red, painful, a bad smell and/or puss or any fever, lethargy or depression you should have your vet examine her to make sure she didn't end up with mastitis (infection that needs treatment). The symptoms can be individual and don't all have to be evident.
