Elvis Presley the legendary singer cum actor was born on January 8, 1935 in East Tupelo, Mississippi; his parents were Vernon Presley and Gladys Love Smith who are described as being opposites in temperament with Vernon being reticent while Gladys being more lively.

On his father's side Elvis is considered to be of German descent with the surname Presley being derived from Pressler which was the name of his ancestor Johann Valentin Pressler who is believed to have emigrated to the United States at the start of the 18th century; the name Presley was adopted by the family in the times of the Civil War.

It is presumed that Elvis was of mixed Scottish, Native American, Irish and Jewish as well as German ancestry. Elvis' early schooling took place in Tupelo followed by a stint in Memphis, Tennessee; he graduated from Humes High School in Memphis with English and History being his majors.
