What Historic Towns Are There To Visit In Somerset?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Somerset set in the South west of England has various historic cities depending on what age of history suits ones preference. There is Glastonbury with its religious myths and history, Cheddar Gorge and its caves with tales from no less than 9000 years ago, or even Bridgwater, a city of the industrial revolution with a port to go.

Glastonbury tells of tales of the Glastonbury Thorn, which stem from the grounds of its historic abbey. The Abbey is one of the oldest churches in England and is now a very popular tourist attraction. People come for a legend which was born when England was young and Arthur, its greatest king, is said to be buried here. Even Joseph of Armithea's staff is said to have taken root here. The Cheddar Man, famous for being the oldest complete human skeleton to have been found in Britain (and not a lover of French cheese), was found in the caves of Cheddar Gorge. The Cheddar man is pretty young, though, being just 9000 years old. Other remains dating back to 11000-12000 years ago have also been discovered. The rock formations in the caves are unique. Also for those trying to keep fit is Jacobs ladder, a few steps—274 according to the breathless bloke who had the inclination to count each agonizing step—that are part of a public path. The gorge itself dates back to the end of the ice age and has many peculiar rock formations.
