What Does Ornithischia Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Ornithischia is any herbivorous dinosaur of the order Ornithischia, having a pelvis resembling that of a bird. The term ornithischia comes from the Greek term ornitheos, which means 'of a bird' and ischion meaning 'hip joint'.

They are referred to as 'bird-hipped' dinosaur coz of their bird-like hip shape, although birds really descended from the 'lizard-hipped' dinosaur. Ornithischia basically are herbivores who occasionally resided in herds, they were more in number as compared to the saurischians. They use to be hunted by theropods for the purpose of food and were much smaller in size as compared to sauropods.

The Dinosauria super order was distributed into two divisions Ornithischian and Saurischia by Harry Seeley in the year 1887. This distribution, which has widely been accepted, is positioned on the basis of the development of the pelvis into a more bird like structure.
