Is It Correct To Say " ....her Involvement In Dance Has Taken A Toll On Her School Attendance " ?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes, you can say that. To take a toll on something basically means to have a bad effect on it/ cost it a lot (if you bear in mind that a toll is a kind of payment, the meaning is clearer.) It's probably used most often in connection with health (long working hours have taken their/ a toll on her health.)

The more usual phrase is "take ITS toll," ie "her involvement in dance has taken its toll on her attendance," but your sentence is fine.
