Which Insects Are Tasty And Nutritious?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Although in Europe people generally turn their noses up at eating insects, many other cultures have no such qualms.  Locusts are commonly eaten in Algeria, most Thailand restaurants have at least one insect dish on the menu, and many insects form the basis of native Australian cuisine.  All insects are high in protein and some (especially grubs) are high in fat, as well.

Optimally insects should be cooked while still alive to preserve their flavour and nutritional content.   It's said that mealworms are best for beginners.  They are easy to manage, unlike crickets, grasshoppers and other jumping or flying bugs who can more easily escape.  Honeybees are a world-wide favourite, spanning many cultures.  You boil them to destroy the poison and soften up their stingers.  Ants taste like vinegar, so boiled in water can be used in place of things like lemon juice.

You can see a variety of recipes and more info on nutritional content at the Iowa State Uni Entomology Club website.
