If You Were Devising A Course On Modern American Drama, What Plays Would You Include In It?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

If I was going to devise a course about modern American drama, I would struggle to pick, as there are so many great plays written in the modern era, I take modern to mean post-1930s, so as to differentiate it from contemporary dramatic work.
The plays that I would include are

    Trifles - Susan Glaspell
Awake and Sing - Clifford Odets
Thorton Wilder - The Last Christmas Dinner
A Street Car Named Desire - Tennessee Williams
    A Long Day's Journey into Night - Eugene O'Neill
Glengarry Glen Ross - David Mamet
    Fences - August Wilson
    The Crucible - Arthur Miller
The Mercy Seat - Neil La Bute
Angels in American Part 1 - Tony Kushner
    Buried Child - Sam Shepard
Anna in the Tropics - Nilo Cruz
How I Learned to Drive - Paula Vogel
    topdog/underdog - Susan Lori Parks
    Broken Glass - Arthur Miller
Doubt - A Parable by John Patrick Shanley
    Proof - David Auburn

    I would also include:

Spring Awakening - the 2006 Musical  and Carousel, to compare the use of dramatic writing in musicals with plays.
