How Soon And What Do You Look For If You Think Your Dog May Be Expecting ?

Gestation (pregnancy) lasts 63-66 days in dogs.  Do you know when your dog was bred?  
The earliest and most reliable way to diagnose pregnancy in dogs is ultrasound.  Ultrasound can be used as early as day 20 but more reliably at day 22-26.  The best way to estimate the number of puppies is via x-ray.  The fetal skeletons calcify at day 45 and after this point can be seen on x-ray.  The puppies can also be palpated on examination at some point between day 26-term.  Talk to your veterinarian about pre-natal care and pregnancy diagnosis.
