Ear infections can be caused by bacteria and yeasts.  Another thing that can cause discharge from the ears is ear mites--this discharge is usually dark brown or black.  These infections need to be identified and treated by your veterinarian.  Most ear infections are treated topically.  Severe infections may require topical and oral antibiotics.
You can buy an ear cleaner at your local pet store but until the infection resolves ear cleaning will not solve the problem.  The problem with at home remedies is that if you don't know what you are treating you may make it worse.  For example a vinegar/water combination can help with yeast but if you have a bacterial infection will make it worse.  You will save yourself time, money, and reduce your dog's discomfort by seeing your veterinarian, getting a diagnosis, and appropriate treatment.
Dogs with environmental allergies can be prone to ear infections.  If this is a problem with your dog your veterinarian can talk to you about allergy control and steps to prevent infection.

I am not completely certain that you can cure an ear infection without seeing your dog.  It sounds like he has some type of bacterial infection in his ears and antibiotics will be needed to clear it out.  If your dog is prone to ear infections once this one is cleared up you should try to clean them regularly to prevent the reoccurrence.
