The Vietnam war was a conflict riddled in ignominy and dissent, not just from abroad but at home as well. What difference does it really make that a people want to fashion their own destiny in their own way or how they choose to live and what Economic systems they wish to ascribe to. America merely entered Vietnam as a proxy war in order to best their Socialist Soviet rivals. There were considerable losses from all sides and the real victims in this war were the Vietnamese. The major problem with the world is that we choose to exercise restraint and end up with the idea that perhaps our way of life is the better one than what the other nation chooses to have. The freedom of choice applies to everyone and we should respect what another person's own free volition entails them to be. The mistrust and misunderstanding that we breed in the name of liberty and freedom does little good for anyone. America suffered heavy casualties against an insurgency, which was essentially a guerrilla war. Vietnamese people saw America as the aggressor and retaliated as a result. Agreed that it was Russians giving them military aid, ammunition and training but it is also true that hatred against America already existed in the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese, especially given the context of war crimes and excesses that had been committed by America in the name of liberty. Besides that, you can not win a war if your own people are not supporting it. The Americans rose against their government's military jingoism and the country saw the biggest cultural movement against the whole issue of wars. It was not a war that America could have won because the insurgency erupted from personal strife and misfortune of an already weak people.
