Do Golf Clubs Allow Women In?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Women are allowed in to golf clubs as equals to men. The Ladies Golf Union of Great Britain conducted the first British Ladies Golf Championship in 1894. Since there were no professional women golfers at the time, it was an all-amateur tournament.

Lady Margaret Scott won the first three championships before retiring from serious competition in 1897.

British women dominated the tournament until 1927, when Thion de la Chaume of France won the championship. The first American woman to win the title was Babe Didrikson Zaharias, in 1946. She was followed by Louise Suggs in 1947.

With the advent of women's professional golf, the tournament remained an amateur event and is now known as the British Ladies Amateur Championship. The tournament has always been conducted at match play, with 18 holes per match.

Today women are taking part in golf very actively. There are several associations such as LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) and LGU (Ladies Golf Union) where women can find out information on Ladies golf and how to start playing.
