Can You Tell Me About The Childhood Days Of Louisa May Alcott?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Born on the 29th of November in 1832, Louisa May Alcott was the second daughter of her parents Abigail (better known as Abba) and Amos Bronson Alcott. Her mother was an abolitionist advocate (Louisa would later follow in her footsteps) and her father was an education and social reformer. He was also a transcendentalist philosopher who was one of the key founders of the very controversial, Temple School. He played a very important role in the education of his daughters, Louisa, Anna, Elizabeth, and May.  The family lived in Germantown (now part of Philadelphia) while the school was located in Boston and so Louisa and her family had to relocate.

By the tender age of seven, she had already started to keep a daily diary. She would make up stories that she and her sisters could act out for their family and friends. The Ascotts were plagued with poverty and at the age of 15, Louisa emphatically vowed that she would one day be rich, famous and happy. Her writing career began with short stories and poetry that were featured in popular local magazines. 1854 saw her first published book, Flower Fables; she was just 22 years old then.
