Actually, as a matter of fact, mercury does have an atmosphere. However it's atmosphere is very thin and can not block meteoroids or asteroids from crashing into the planet like our very own Earth does. How you ask? Well, scientists showed that Mercury's atmosphere is made up of atoms blasted off it's surface by the solar winds. But Mercury's atmosphere is slowly being replenished. So in about another 90 million years or so, your answer of Mercury not having an atmosphere might just become true.
