Why Is Important For A Person Accused Of A Crime To Have A Speedy Trial?

Individual rights guarantee by the bill of rights why are they important to the American society?

    This is because in England during the time before the American Revolution, the king could have someone locked up indefinitely without being told why they were being arrested, and it was often used to just get someone out of the way.  While in the American legal system, a "speedy trial" can be months away from after being arrested, and can sometimes take years to complete, but a person has to be charged with the crime within a matter of hours (48, I believe, but I could be wrong).
