What's Hawker Siddeley?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

After the bankruptcy of the Sopwith Aviation Company at the end of the first World War, its assets were resold and the H.G. Hawker Engineering Company was formed in 1920. It became one of the leading suppliers of aircraft to the Royal Air Force. Its planes at this time included the Hawker Hind and the Hawker Hart.

The Hawker Engineering Company was reformed as Hawker Aircraft Limited in 1933. Due to the great depression and the surplus capital available to the company, it purchased Gloster Aircraft in 1934.
In the following year, the company formed an association of aviation companies including Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, Armstrong Siddeley Motors, A.V. Roe and Air Training Services. The merger of Hawker Aircraft with Armstrong Siddeley as part of this consortium of aircraft manufacturers came to be known as Hawker Siddeley.
