Healthcare professionals define chronic fatigue syndrome (which is commonly abbreviated as CFS), as a debilitating and complex disorder characterised by chronic and profound fatigue. CFS cannot be cured completely even by taking proper bed rest. It is often severely aggravated by high levels of strenuous physical and mental activity.
A CFS patient must basically satisfy two criteria: firstly, he/she must have severe fatigue lasting for a duration of six months or longer with other medical conditions excluded by clinical diagnosis, and secondly, four or more of the following general symptoms must simultaneously occur: weakness, substantial loss of concentration or memory on a short-term basis, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pains, multi-joint pain without swelling or redness, headaches of a new type, pattern or severity, unrefreshing sleep or insomnia and post-exertional malaise lasting for longer than one day.
