How To Train Deaf Dogs?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Having a hearing impaired dog should not be a deterrent to training your dog. The standard principle used when you train a deaf dog is actually the same as when you train a hearing dog (or for that matter any animal). You have to reward behaviours that you would like your dog to repeat and withhold rewards for any behaviour you do not want. A dog will do what works for him or her; if a certain act results in a reward they like, they will tend to repeat it.

You need to establish a method of communicating with your pet. You can rely heavily on visual signals. You can even try making use of their other senses like sense of touch or their sense of smell. Hand signals, which are most popular, should be clear, distinguishable, seen from a distance and most importantly they should be consistent. At the end of the day, what any dog needs is a lot of patience and tender loving care.

I've always used gentle talking to train any animals.
Though I've never done it I would step up on touching, rewards, and use body and facial language every time.
Let me know if it works!
