Why Has Chess Remained So Popular Through The Ages?

One of the main reasons for the continuing popularity of chess through the ages is the fact that the legal playing positions in chess are estimated to number somewhere in the order of 10 to the power of 43 to 10 to the power of 50 .
In non-mathematical terms that's a brain-busting 10 followed by up to 50 zeroes. And if that doesn't make your head throb, the total number of possible chess games is reckoned to be around 10 to the power of 123
With such huge and unimaginable numbers of gaming possibilities involved, it's little wonder that chess has remained an evergreen pastime for over a thousand years. And little wonder, too, that the mind-numbing permutations for many decades have been tilted at by a steady band of chess computers.
Certainly, there are no signs of chess falling out of fashion any time soon given the advent of computer chess packages and the possibility of playing opponents from around the globe via the internet.
