    Codeine is a medicine used as a sedative as well as a pain killer. It is an opoid drug which means that it is a drug found in opium. It is used as an ingredient in cough suppressants. It is similar to morphine but is weaker and less potent than morphine. This drug has analgesic, antitussive and antidiarrheal properties which makes it a common ingredient is cough syrups and pain relieving medicines.

    Paracetamol and aspirin are two popular medicines which contain codeine. It is considered as a prodrug. Medicines with very low content of codeine can be sold even without a prescription in most countries but a prescription is needed if the dosage is very high. This drug has certain side effects like itching, nausea, vomiting, giddiness, hypotension, dryness of mouth, urinary retention and constipation.
