The textbook published by Tata McGraw-Hill's General Studies Manual is comprehensive and elaborate, giving enough information on general studies for UPSC preliminary examination. For optional subjects like economics, you will have to refer to degree level text books. The textbook on political science from Bakshi or Basu is good enough for the political science subject. For subjects like history, geography and social studies, refer to NCERT books.

For language subjects, the 9th or 10std textbooks are sufficient. It is important to keep yourself updated by reading revised issues of the competition success review, Frontline, Chronicles etc. Also if possible join classes on UPSC conducted in your area. Some of them have their own entrance examination to qualify for their course. They provide you with textbooks and content for UPSC. You can also get textbooks and materials as a part of 'correspondence course' from Brilliant Tutorials.
