Jane Toppan was born with the name Honora Kelly in the year 1854. She was basically an American serial killer. In the year 1901 she confessed to the killing of 31 people. Jane was basically raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. She belonged to a poor family who had a history of mental illnesses. In the year 1863 he father sent her to the orphanage and it was then that she was taken in by Ann Toppan, who never officially adopted her but gave the child her last name. In the year 1885 Toppan began her training as a nurse at the Cambridge Hospital. During her training she started using her patients as guinea pigs and started inducing different dozes of morphine and atropine in order to observe how their nervous systems would react. She killed several patients in this process and there was no foul play suspected. She was then transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital where she claimed the lives of several other patients as well till she was fired from that job in the year 1890.
Toppan then started a career as a private nurse and continued her killing spree by way of poisoning her patients. On the 26th of October in the year 1901 she was finally arrested by the authorities. By the year 1902 she confessed to 11 murders. Later on she confessed to a total of 31 murders and during her trial she wanted the jury to think that she was insane that's why she committed these murders. She was given life imprisonment and she remained at the Taunton Mental Institute where she finally died of natural causes in the year 1938.
