How Can I Get Better At Drawing?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Look at other people's artwork and study their technique. What my teacher in art class told me is to take bits and pieces of other artists work and combine them to make your own original style.

Practice, practice, practice is what most art teachers advise students to do in order to get better at drawing. The nice thing about the activity is that it costs so little. All you need is a sketchpad and some pencils and an eraser. Use some blank paper if you don't have a sketchpad. Artist pencils work best but if those aren't at hand, just use a regular number 2 pencil.

Make sure that you use glasses, that you wear them when you draw. It will cause less strain on your eyes. Draw very lightly initially. That way, you can correct your lines easily.

It is sometimes helpful to concentrate on 'negative shapes' or the shapes of spaces that surround objects. By focusing on drawing negative shapes, you will find that you have inadvertently drawn the object with improved accuracy.

If you can manage to set aside a little time each day or each week for drawing, you may be astounded by the improvements in your work. Best of all, they will be recorded with each drawing.
