Newton's first law states that a stationary body would remain stationary and a moving body would keep on moving at a constant speed until an external force is applied on it. A rock stays in its place until you kick it and your parked car would not move until somebody pushes it (if you left the hand break off, that is!).
Newton's second law is a continuation of the first law and states that the amount by which a body accelerates depends on the force applied. I would quote the law in Newton's words (translated from Latin):
"The change of momentum of a body is proportional to the impulse impressed on the body, and happens along the straight line on which that impulse is impressed."
This law is usually written as
F=ma
where F is the force, m is mass and a stands for acceleration.
For example, if you exert a certain amount of force in putting a ball and pushing a car, the amount of acceleration in both would be different. This is because of the difference in their masses.
