By mouse pad, I think you mean just the mouse... If you have a ball on the bottom of your mouse, there may be hair or gunk stuck in it. My mouse has a removable bottom so I can take the ball out and clean it off, then it starts working. If it's a laser mouse or if it still doesn't work after doing this, I would buy a new one.

If you mean the touchpad style mouse on some portables, I suggest that you just get a cheap usb mouse. Unless it is a missing driver problem, it will be cheaper and easier to just get a regular old mouse.
