Without seeing the vehicle, it's difficult to be 100 per cent accurate. However, I have a sneaky suspicion this problem with your Ford Taurus is the air conditioning unit.
If I am barking up the right tree, your vehicle is cutting out when the air con is on full blast and you're stuck in traffic or otherwise stationary with the engine running. Given the age of the vehicle, the air conditioning is probably not working at its optimum. Even so, no air con unit, no matter how new, can cope in all circumstances.
When stationary the vehicle has difficulty getting rid of the heat and as the temperature under the hood rises, problems such as cutting out occur. Under normal operation with the car moving, this heat build up just doesn't happen.
The solution is either to switch off the air con when your vehicle is stationary for long periods, or fit a manual switch to override the temperature sensor for the electric cooling fan.
