Injections are a method of administering a dose of liquid medication to the body by piercing a part of the body with a hollow needle and syringe. The syringe is pieced into the skin for a long time so that the material inside the syringe is forced into the body. Injection follows the parenteral route to administer the dosage to the body. It is a systematic form of treatment of diseases. However it is not necessary that the part which is injected is the one which is afflicted with the disease or ailment.
There are four types of injections, namely subcutaneous injection (that is, injection into the sub-cutis, the layer of skin that is directly below the dermis and the epidermis), intramuscular injection (that is, injection directly into the muscle), depot injection (that is, either the subcutaneous or intramuscular injection of a pharmacological agent. This releases active compounds consistently over a long period of time) and intravenous infusion (that is, the direct administration of a liquid into the bloodstream through a vein.)
