When Was The Prohibition Era? Please Help Me.

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This period lasted from 1920 to 1933 in the US. Alcohol was made illegal in 1920 all over the US, after years of campaigning by church and temperance societies. The Act that brought in Prohibition was known as the Volstead Act after the Congressman who introduced it.

Over the 13 years that it lasted, Prohibition was blamed for a huge rise in alcoholism fuelled by illegal drinking. Secret drinking dens sprang up, called speakeasies, where it became fashionable to spend the evening. Dorothy Parker and Scott Fitzgerald are two examples of Americans who developed drinking problems during the Prohibition era.

It also led to bootlegging (the sale of illegal alcohol) which in turn led to a rise in organised crime, led by such figures as Al Capone. By 1933, the tide of public opinion had completely turned against Prohibition, and the Volstead Act was repealed that year.

It is still illegal in many American states to drink alcohol under the age of 21.
