Tadpoles start out eating their own yolk sacks. Once that's exhausted they are completely vegetarian, eating algae, plants and other microscopic things in the water. Some say it's sufficient to just keep adding fresh pond water to get more microbes in; fresh live pond plants may be suitable too (especially if they come with their own coating of algae).
When their back legs emerge, within a short period of time they turn into complete carnivores. They will indeed eat each other if not enough microbes/insects/other small animals are in the water.
They quite like mincemeat, but don't leave uneaten bits as it may poison the water.

I Have about a couple of hundred tadpoles they seem to be eating the fish food as well as the algae on the tank! There gills have gone grown and they only have one ( some of them ) so they should start growing legs soon :)

We raised some tadpoles and we fed them frozen boiled lettuce from the time we got them, until the time we released them into a pond. We only had one tadpole that didn't survive, so what we were feeding them, must have worked.
I am doing a science project with tadpoles in it and i found some stuff about them. NEVER put them in any type of chlorinated water, pond water is best! They like lettuce and some fish food and some algea. Also, don't put too many ina closed container, they can't be too cramped! Good luck future tadpole growers!

If you want to keep tadpoles in a tank etc, you are always best to start off with putting the water where you got the tadpoles from for example (pond) into where you are keeping them, along with some of the plant that habitate in the water also. Tadpole eat micro-scopic particles from the water which have been broken down from species in the water itself. I believe that if u are going to keep tadpoles you should put them in a tank where there is both land and water in when they have matured into tiny frogs.

FROM EGG:
At birth a tadpole will emerge from it's egg without a developed mouth, it will attach itself to something (lilies or a bit of wood works) by way of sticky spots on its head. For a few days it will simply sit there living off yoke that is still attached to it and breathing through its gills. After that it will detach and start to swim.
LEGLESS:
At this stage they are herbivorous. Before they get legs, Romaine lettuce or spinach, boiled and then frozen is good. Crushed algae is available at some pet stores and is also good. Small amounts twice a day, if there are lots of left overs feed less, if they are getting aggressive with other tadpoles feed more.
BUDDING LEGS:
My local pet shop actually sells what they call "Tadpole Bites", which is essentially the same as the fish food that sinks, the little pellet style stuff. As your tadpoles start growing their hind legs they need protein that lettuce doesn't provide and the pellets are better for that.
BRACES AND ACNE CREAM:
It should be noted that there is a sort of "awkward stage" where your amphibious friends will be too big for pellets and yet still too small for crickets. One should remember that most pet stores DO sell nymph crickets (babies), but you can also feed them fruit flies, bloodworms, and other small invertebrates. One person mentioned cutting flowers from her garden to feed them aphids (effective and cost efficient).
LOSING TAILS/FROGS:
Once they are large enough crickets and mealworms are good. Some species of frog gorge themselves and this is not healthy. If you are keeping your frog, it is wise to research the species once it is grown enough, so you can find how much your frog SHOULD be eating.
ODDS AND ENDS:
Lastly, I have read some things about tadpole care that are not related to feeding that I will throw in at the end real fast. Tap water will kill them, use dechlorinated water only. Do not overcrowd, I leave it up to you as to what that means, but one writer said no more than 6 in a tank. As tadpoles grow into frogs they will need something to climb onto, the aforementioned lilies and wood bits work, but a partially submerged rock or gravel slope is also good. The period where they start needing a place to crawl can happen over night, so you might want to keep something in there even before they need it. Partial sunlight is best. A screen is a must, don't want to come home to a house full of freshly developed frogs. And don't be hesitant to call your local pet shop people, especially Mom and Pop places, those people know their stuff.
P.S. I mean it about the Mom and Pop places, call them, buy from them, support local business!

Hi,
I have a tadpole and it is around 2 weeks old.
I feed it flaky fish food and baby pellets. I also put in a plant in from my fish tank and it is covered in Algae. Is that alright and am I feeding it the right stuff? It is still alive so I think it is having the right stuff.
Thanks. Plz answer my question.

I used to put little fish pellets in the water and tey would get soft and they would nibble on it they LOVED it and they both grew up and lived. So softened fish pellets are good for them. Oh and i got some today and they were in rain water so a water bit of that is in ther and clean tap water. Is that good? And they swimmin, so i think that they finished wit their yolk saks. They r really tiny so i can shred fish flakes and they wil eat it i think.

Tadpoles or frog spawn eat a variety of foods tadpoles have been known to eat foods like lettuce, fish food, egg yolk and even baby cereal. A tadpole starts feeding a few days after it is born typically when it starts growing legs until which it feeds on its own egg yolk and does not need to be fed externally.
Once it has grown sufficiently it starts feeding on mainly algae if it is in a pond and may even eat its own kind if sufficient food is not available for example in a tank.
Tadpoles are known to eat lettuce though one would do well to boil and freeze any before feeding them solidified egg yolk and fish food can also be utilized. Ideally tadpoles should be fed two pinches of food twice in a day after eight hours taking care not to dirty the water too much.
Also one would do well to change the water only after the tadpoles have sufficiently grown in to froglets, indicated by the disappearance of their tail.
I have tried the lettuce and dont know if they are eating it. It doesn't seem to disappear but them i guess its fairly big chunks for a tadpole.
They all seem to be surviving on something though. They've not got legs yet.

My family and I are raising tadpoles at the moment and we are feeding them lettuce. We have been feeding them boiled lettuce for 1-2 weeks now, and none of them have died so we must be doing something right. We have a pond in our meadow and once or twice a week I get 1 gallon of pond water and pour it into the fish tank where they live. I don't empty the old water since it evaporates and I just re-fill it up. This is working great for my family and I highly recommend it. We have been raising tadpoles every year so we are the experts!

Guest

Well if they are inside you house in a bowl or in your classroom then the best thing to feed them is boiled lettuce. Then when they become frogs still feed them boiled lettuce, but you should give them a live fly once or twice a week.

They eat lettuce and you must boil and then freeze in or they may die.
I own tadpoles that live in a tub in my front garden and they are starting to grow their legs. I feed them sweet corn every 2 days because every day I give them 5 flakes of fish food.
I got little baby tadpoles, and they are newborn, but I don't know when they should be able to eat other foods except algae.

They really like algae wafers, some like fish flake as well.... That's what mine ate.
Boil lettuce, not iceberg, then freeze it, then boil it, then freeze it, then boil it, then let it cool. The more you do this the more mushy it will get and the more the tadpoles will like it.
They love to eat lettuce, little chopped up pieces, you can give them a couple pieces a day and they will be fine.

Tadpoles or "Polliwogs" as I believe our American cousins sometimes call them eat, as has been mentioned previously are herbivorous, subsisting mainly on algae and plants.
However as they get older they can develop sharp teeth and have been known to drag small dogs and sometimes unsuspecting children into ponds for munchies!

Tadpoles start off eating their yolk sacks until they get exhausted, Then they start eating seaweed and algy.
If you are trying to keep care of a tadpole keep it in clean tap water or if you get it from a stream or creek make sure it`s not polluted.
Tadpoles like to always have clean water.
