The capital of the state of Alabama is Montgomery. It is the second most populous city in Alabama. In the 2000 census, there 201, 568 people residing in Montgomery. Many people know Montgomery, Alabama because of its involvement in the American Civil War because it was the capital of the Confederacy. Montgomery was also was one of the primary states in the Civil Rights movement. During the Civil Rights Movement, Montgomery was the site of the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. The very first Hyundai plant is also located there. The current mayor of Montgomery is Bobby Bright. Bright was elected mayor in the 1999 municipal elections, defeating long time mayor Emory Folmar. Bobby Bright was re-elected in a landslide against challenger Scott Simmons in the 2003 municipal elections. Today, Montgomery is more than the capital of Alabama, It is the capital of the south with southern hospitality, good weather, and many hi-tech and well paying jobs.
