Has Portugal Ever Been Under Muslim Control?

Answer Question

Yes, Portugal was in fact conquered by Muslim Moors around 712-716 AD.  However, this control really lasted only for about 150 years, since the Vikings continuously invaded Portugal, weakening the Muslim hold on the country.
The history of Portugal is fascinating, since it was always seen as an important place due to its vast coastline.
The Carthaginians first invaded Portugal in the 3rd Century BC.  It then came under the Romans in the 2nd Century BC.  It was then subject to invasion by Germanic tribes which resulted in 410 AD, in an independent Swabian kingdom being set up in Portugal.
Spain then seized control in 585 and it became a Christian country, until the Muslim invasion.
It was only in 1128 that Portugal was finally given independence, although the Moors were reluctant to relinquish control.  However, in 1139, the Moors were heavily defeated after a battle at Ovrique when Henry of Burgundy saw off the Moors and since then it has remained in Christian control.
