How Can I Improve My Presentation Skills?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

For many people the idea of standing up in front of an audience to give a talk is one that fills them with dread, whether it's for a wedding, business presentation or after dinner speaking.

Being a confident speaker is a skill that can be learnt. Of course, some people find it easier than others but even those who find it difficult can be helped with training and practice. There are many commercial training courses available for those who wish to hone their skills for business presentations and employers often provide these. If you have a wedding or other engagement to speak of, and it's more of a one off thing, there are many books available from libraries or shops that will help you. Many are specific to family events such as weddings.

If you think that you'll want to speak more often, perhaps at network group meetings or at business events where you may be asked to be an after dinner speaker, then joining a local 'Toastmasters' group might be the answer. You can find them by searching on the web or looking them up in the phone book. This is an organised but friendly group where people gather together once or twice a month to deliver speeches and help each other improve their speaking skills.

There are many ways to improve presentation skills. First, dress appropriately for the occasion, being neat and tidy. Second use visual aids when possible. Third, look directly at different people in the audience, not just one person, or as some do,  straight ahead. Use hand gestures, and facial expressions to illuminate the topic. Modulate your voice, so that you do not speak in a monotone, which is boring to hear. Sound enthusiastic especially when presenting main ideas or important information. If you are presenting to a single person, be sure to make eye contact with them. Smile. You can practice these skills with a friend, or in front of a mirror, until you feel natural doing this.
