Kalamazoo (note correct spelling) is an industrial city in southwest Michigan in the upper Midwest area of the United States. Its population was 80,271 in the 1990 Census.
The name is an American Indian word, meaning either "mirage of reflecting water." or bubbling water. This reflects the city's site at the confluence of the Kalamazoo River and Portge Creek.
Indians also left their mark on the city by building large, mysterious mounds in intricate patterns, as found in Bronson Park. In 1833, a local tribe exchanged 5 million acres of its land for $40,000 in trinkets.
Surrounded by rich farmland, Kalamazoo is also famed for its paper mills; indeed, it was once known as "Paper City." It is the home of Western Michigan University.
But most people know about this city with the odd name from Glen Miller's catchy swing tune "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo."
