Periods in dogs are not like humans. Instead of periods, heat period is proper term for dogs and cats. During heat periods in dogs, vaginal swelling and bleeding can be seen during first stage of heat cycle which can last for 7-10 days. During this stage mating is not possible because females don't allow males to come closer. Mating occurs when this bleeding is ceased or reduced during second stage of heat cycle.
