The study that was conducted to test the magnitude of effectiveness of the intravenous infusion of zoledronic acid consisted of a sample of about 7765 women. Out of those 7765 women, about 3889 of them were given an intravenous administration of zoledronic acid for a duration of fifteen minutes.

The remaining 3876 were given a placebo on day 0, 12 months and 24 months. Nevertheless all of the women included in the sample received oral calcium treatment (about 1000 to 1500 mg.) and also oral vitamin D treatment (about 400 to 1200 IU). Interviews were conducted with all the women every three months on the telephone while visits were made after 6, 12, 24 and 36 months. In the span of about three years, the vertebral fracture risk reduced by a whooping 70 percent in the group that was given the treatment of the intravenous infusion of the zoledronic acid as compared to the group given the treatment of placebo.
