Should Homework Be Abolished?

Answer Question

17 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Nowadays, students can not indulge in any activities other than those included in their school syllabus. School takes up half of the day, while the other half is wasted on homework. Students can only take a short nap after their school, and then start completing their homework. Homework is done when it's nearly time for bed, and Mom starts telling them to go to sleep. Weekends, instead of bringing fun, bring a diary full of test schedules, and a sleepless night plus a tense day.

Thus, homework is more of a burden than any help to the students. Keeping this in mind, anyone can come to the conclusion that homework should be abolished. To compensate the loss, school hours can be increased. It may also help if only four or five periods are held in class, so that students can understand and memorize the lesson then and there. In this way, students can spend appropriate time on study, and the remaining time on other healthy activities like Sports, Reading, and Writing etc.

This will also give time to students to spend with their family. To conclude, homework should be abolished, but steps should be taken to compensate the loss. In this way we might also see many budding sports persons, writers etc who will bring pride to their families and their nation too.

Both my kids went to schools that did not assign homework, had no tests, and did not give out grades. They grew up to be well-rounded individuals and each graduated from college with honors.

Homework can provide an opportunity for students to practice what they've been exposed to in class. Too often, it does not serve that purpose.

The mix of student ability and class size should be arranged to allow a teacher to give enough individual attention and help students find the resources they need to achieve understanding of a particular point. Under those conditions, assignments can be completed during school hours and no homework is necessary.

Assignment of homework to the students who don't "get it" is a poor substitute for individual attention. Assignment of homework to the students who do "get it" is a waste of their time and an assault on their motivation.

You have some excellent points here, especially your last paragraph. I absolutely agree with this, however, I do not agree with class assignments. This time is to be used for teaching the entire class - homework should be assigned to students to 'test' their understanding and then yes, don't just continue giving it for the sake of it. If they get it great - if they don't find another approach - but nobody can expect different approaches for 20+ students in a class. That's just impossible.

I almost agree with your comment about 20+ students. Class size should *never* be that large. (That said, I went to school in classes of 25-35 students.) 10-12 students is a good maximum, and 12 is stretching it. Even so, it is helpful if the students are grouped developmentally, so the teacher isn't challenged further by the range of abilities. It seems possible that large classes could be divided into groups that get more individual attention as a group. Students can help each other.

Class sizes are very important, but theory and reality are very different. My sons 1st grade class has 24 students, and our Governor has just announcd 3.75 billion dollar cut to education this year compared to last year. There are no frills left. The PTA already covers library books, homework club after school and Physical Education equipment, as these are not covered by government funds even in public education. The only place the cuts can come from are teachers! This means bigger classes.

We kids have enough to do after school without homework on top of that. Basides, keeping us in the house 24/7 isn't the answer. We need to make our own choices regarding our lifestyles. The best you can do is teach us right from wrong and hope that we listen. T.T most of us do. The sterotype of "angry teens" is because thats all you see in the media, and they don't tell you that its only a small portion of the population of teens causing the trouble, the rest of us dont!!!!

Absolutely not.  By doing homework, kids are practicing what they have learned in school.  By getting rid of homework, a teacher would be unable to tell until test time whether or not the kids get the material, and by then it is too late.

A big problem with Elementary Level education is that there is no homework (at least where my son goes to school, which is disgraceful.)

A well accepted guide to homework is that a kid should get 10 minutes per grade level.  If your in 8th grade that means 1 hour 20 minutes.

Most parents right now are pushing for more homework.

Homework helps you to polish your skills and knowledge related to what you are working on, so I would say that homework must not be abolished. It is a crucial aspect that makes us advanced in the related field. You must have heard that practice makes a man perfect, here it can be said that 'practice' refers to homework.  Homework usually m means 'preparation.' Usually homework is given to school going children to see that they understand concepts, get well-versed with what was taught in the class-room and commit things to memory. It is not essential that only students do homework, even employed people do their homework related to their work.

If you get bored while doing homework you can make your work interesting. You can call up friends and complete your work together. Similarly, there are many different ways in which you can enjoy doing your home work and be an expert in the related topic. No,I think children should be given some home work on daily basis as this thing makes them responsible, and more concerned about their studies.
But over burden is not good as well, as they also need some time to relax and play.

          In my opinion, homework is both good  and  bad;
i know about homework now because the only reason i am on this site is because of homework .
Homework does provide students  with extra practice on assignments and problems they do not understand , but it also leaves them stressed and frustrated when they don't have a life of their own.
I'm a dancer,, i dance at least 9 hours  in a week, and the rest is spent on studies, and school.  I have No time for a life of my own " i'm way too  busy " but i could never ever give up dancing,
also, if a kid doesn't understand something they should ask the teacher at school, or their provide i their own time

According to me homework should not be banned because if children will not get the homework then they will not be able to revise what they have studied in class they will come home and play 4 a whole day

and when the exams come they will not be able to perform well
so homework should be given to children but there should be a limit of homework
the child will not get overburdened by homework

No, because children need that time when they get home to relax and enjoy the afternoon, not snowed under by homework.

Yes, homework home work should be abolish because when the childrens get home they come  tire and all they want to do they want to relax , but they can't relax because they have home work to do and when its sunny outside they can't go out side because they have home work to finish so thats why home work should be eliminated.

Oh Yeah! It should so be abolished! Me and my sister barely have time to hang with friends and stay fit. So many kids get bigger because they have no time to run and play.I have one teacher that today let us run up the small hill behind our school and back before the bell rang and I felt great to have a real quick break to run.

Yes!   As long as the student is working hard and doing there best to do all they can!   I am a Home Schooling Mom ,,,was 5 now down to 3.......I seem to be working with them over 5 hours
a day and weekends.  I sure wish I had a little way to back off becouse the Schools just want
more and more no matter how hard these kids are trying.  And yes I have been apart of public Schools also!  So I know all areas of the School system that there is, and I so think that kids, "young people" need time for there self's. There own time to choose and do anything, sports,
art and just whatever lets them break free,,,,,,and so do us parents. I do everything for my kids.
We as adults need this too! Why push them until they want nothing to do with there studies!

Long time Mom!  With public and Home Schooling!     Michelle   Ca..

I agree with it because homework takes most of our day time when we can interact with society or play and they are not even productive because we cannot do them whole - heartedly. Instead of homework we should be given work which we enjoy to do at home and not in a large amount.
