    The Indus Valley Civilization was discovered by the modern world in the 1920s. This civilization existed in the Ghaggar – Hakra and Indus river valleys from 3300 to 1700 BC. These areas where this civilization flourished are now Pakistan and northwestern India.  This civilization is also known as the Harappan civilization which comes from the first excavated city of Harappa. This civilization was discovered by the modern world as a result of archaeological excavations. This civilization is also referred to as the Indus Ghaggar – Hakra Civilization or the Indus – Saraswati Civilization as the Ghaggar – Hakra river was the Saraswati river in ancient times. The remnants of this civilization have been found as far west as Sutkan Dor in Baluchistan, Pakistan and as far east as Lothal in Gujrat, Pakistan.

    This civilization was settled in areas in most of which are now Pakistan as well as the western states of India. Indus valley sites have been found mostly on river banks and at some ancient sea coasts as well. This civilization according to experts was a combination of ethnic groups in the Ghaggar – Hakra valley on the borders of India and Pakistan. Till now about 500 Harappan sites have been discovered along the dried up river beds of the Ghaggar – Hakra river.
