Canterbury is a town in the county of Kent in England. It is located in the City of Canterbury district of the region of southwest England. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primate of All England, the head of the Church of England and the headquarters of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The city of Canterbury was declared a county corporate in 1461.

According to a population census conducted in the year 2001, the population of Canterbury is 42, 259. The Canterbury Cathedral was the place where King Henry IV and Edward the Black Prince were buried, but the city is more famous for being the place where Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170. This historic event made Canterbury a famous place of pilgrimage and inspired Geoffrey Chaucer to write his famous book The Canterbury Tales in 1387.

It is the twin city of Reims in France and the sister city of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois in the United States, Vladimir in Russia and Esztergom in Hungary. It is also the birthplace of Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom and the hometown of the cartoon character Rupert Bear.
