How Are The Ocean Currents Affecting The Climate In Europe?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The West Wind Drift intensifies as it flows around the cape and brings a cold water current that flows west-to-east around the Cape Horn. This is the Cape Horn Current. The West Wind Drift around Cape Horn generates the Falkland Current. This is cold water current which moves north toward the Atlantic coast near Patagonia and near Rio de la Plata.
The North Atlantic Drift is the extension of Gulf Stream towards Europe. This brings warm air to the continent; especially to the Western and Northern parts. The North Atlantic Current that branches to the south is called the Canary Current. It takes its name from Canary Islands. This current runs southwest toward Senegal. It brings cold winds generated by the upwelling of water below the surface water. The other branch glides along the northwest of Europe. This current generates warm climate in western and northern parts of Europe. In this climate, the vegetation that requires warm habitat for its growth grows well. The other varieties of plants in the region are not affected by higher temperature.
