Before we begin answering this question it is very important to know if the person concerned person has more to his financial life than just repayment of his housing loan and contributing to the retirement fund apart from a full time job. If it is so then filing the returns is no big task.

The next question is that how comfortable the person concerned is with numbers, not just the basic math but entering these numbers properly in the proper columns of the tax forms. A little bungling on the part of the taxpayer can result in bigger problems. Moreover understanding the questions asked is important as you are going to answer it correctly only if you understand it. A small mistake here can again result in further complications.

So if you plan to your own tax returns then first and foremost you should be able to understand your own returns. There are quite a few tax software tools available in the market for filing in the tax return form but primarily you have to enter the information asked correctly then alone you shall get a correctly filled in tax return form. There are many cases where people have used these tax soft wares and have still made mistakes, thus receiving bills and penalties from the IRS.

Finally if time is more important than money for you it is always better to take the help of a tax professional who shall guide you correctly thus saving time and unnecessary hassles that follow a incorrectly filled up form.
